The LAUGFS – NAITA partnership to support career enhancement of local service sector professionals was a result of the unwavering efforts by a number of inspiring individuals. Mr. Shehan Seneviratne was one of them, who was instrumental in driving this project as the Chairman of NAITA. He is also an award-winning entrepreneur and is the Chairman of SMS Holdings. He spoke to us about his professional and personal life, following a quick round of rapid-fire questions.
Q: Who was your inspiration?
A: My Father. He taught me to be determined, even during the most difficult times.
Q: What 3 words best describe you?
A: Honest. Straightforward. Brave. My father lived by these words as well.
Q: Do you have a personal mantra that you follow?
A: Yes, “Whatever you do, give it your absolute best!”
Q: What is your biggest challenge?
A: I thrive on facing challenges. But if there’s one thing I find difficult, that is understanding people.
Q: What are your top 3 dos and don’ts at work?
A: Dos would be, have an organizer, a clear mind and focus. Don’ts would be avoid losing your cool, keep away from distractions and limit extended meetings.
Q: You’ve been recognized as an entrepreneur, pioneer and leader. Which do you prefer?
A: Without doubt, an entrepreneur which is what enabled me to become a pioneer and leader.

Q: What would you say is your greatest achievement?
A: Being awarded the Sri Lankan Entrepreneur of the Year 2016 by the FCCISL.
Q: What does a typical day look like for you?
A: I make sure I find the perfect balance between my work and personal life. After a day’s work, I either go to the gym or play badminton for an hour. And then, my evening hours are dedicated to my family.
Q: What is the first thing you do when you get to work?
A: I like to have my day planned well ahead so the first thing I do is go through my organizer.
Q: What would have been your alternate profession?
A: I almost enrolled in the Sri Lanka Navy to become a pilot.
Q: What is your fondest memory from your childhood?
A: Running towards victory during the 4x100m relay at the National Athletic Meet and being awarded Sri Lanka Colours for the win.

Q: Would your teachers describe you as mischievous or studious?
A: I have always been mischievous!
Q: How would you describe your youth?
A: Happiest time of my life! No responsibilities, mostly found in the playground.
Q: What do you enjoy doing at leisure?
A: I make sure I spend quality time with my family. If I have time I play badminton to keep fit. I also have my very own farm, which I maintain in my backyard.
Q: What is your idea of a perfect holiday?
A: Holidays to me means having peace of mind. So, anywhere that is relaxing!

A: Quality at its best!

A: Definitely Kumar Sangakkara
Q: Something you always wanted to do, but never done?
A: It’s been 10 years since I’ve always wanted to own a Moris Minor Car – a minimalistic beauty.
Q: If there was one thing that you can change in this world what would it be?
A: I’d eradicate poverty in a heartbeat.

A: There’s no place like my home.
Q: What goals are in line for Shehan Seneviratne?
A: I’m exactly where I want to be in life, I have achieved all my targets. Now, I want my children to become responsible citizens of the country.
